Notes From the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick

Notes from the Midnight Driver by Jordan Snnonenblick is a fictional novel about Alex Gregory who is sentenced to community work for underage, reckless, drunk driving. He is assigned to a particularly bitter man named Solomon Lewis and the story winds through the growth of their relationship. Alex’s life has the common struggles of an everyday teenager—worrying about girls and trying to do his best on the SATs. However, he is also from a broken family (e.g., his parents are divorced) and not everyone is arrested during their junior year, which makes for a more interesting story.

I will say however, that it was difficult for me to feel engaged throughout the story. There are some tearjerker moments where I’m fully engaged. But even for middle school students, especially those who struggle to be interested in literature, I wonder if this text would be the most effective text to study. I feel as if the language is not challenging enough and thematically it is bit lacking for discussion purposes.
