Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood

Persepolis is a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi. It is a retelling of her story from the ages of six to fourteen, during the time of the Iranian Revolution. Satrapi is a young girl thrown into a chaotic point in history; she is the only child of staunch Marxists. This graphic novel really paints a picture of her time and what it would be like to grow up in a war-torn where your roots were seated deep within the history of the country in which you lived. In this book Satrapi does a terrific job of showing the dichotomy of home life and social life in Iran. This book brings to light the view of many people of the revolution that occurred in Iran, the public's view on the heroes of the revolution, and their ideas and thoughts on the fallen emperors and those who were bold enough to oppose them. In all I find this book a very fun and easy read that I feel I got more from than any textbook that you could get your hands on.
